Early History
Before Reseda was established by Europeans The area used to be home to Tongva people who lived in the area for thousands of years. They were renowned for their agricultural practices and constructed houses using the local resources. However, following the advent of Spanish Explorers at the end of the 17th century the Tongva people were forced from the area while the region was seized from the Spanish Empire.
In the 20th century, the region which is today Reseda was primarily agricultural, and had huge areas of grapes, wheat and citrus. But in the 20th century, as Los Angeles began to grow and expand, the city required more housing. Reseda was considered to be the ideal site for development because of the close proximity to downtown.
Development and Growth
In 1912 in 1912, it was in the year 1912 that the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad was extended to in the San Fernando Valley, and the station was constructed in Reseda. Reseda has a number of important landmarks worth a visit for those who are interested in the history of the area. One of them is Reseda Theater which was built in 1948 and is currently an important cultural landmark. It was once hot location for movie enthusiasts however, it began to fall into disrepair during the 1980s and was close to being destroyed. But a group of local residents took on the challenge of saving the theater and it was finally restored and opened in the late 1990s. Nowadays, it’s a favored location for live music as well as theater shows.
Another important attraction is Reseda Country Club, which was once the hotspot of Hollywood celebrities during the 1960s, 1950s. The club had an 18-hole golf course, a tennis courts. It was also known for its extravagant social events and parties. But by the 1970s the club was falling into disrepair, and was eventually closed.
